Hanjin bankruptcy fallout likely to drive spot market rates up
A load-to-truck imbalance created by Hanjin’s bankruptcy will likely put upward pressure on spot market rates, especially for loads originating on the West Coast and heading east.
September 27, 2016
This graph from DAT shows the recent Hanjin-caused jump in outbound loads in the Los Angeles area. “The bar graphs below tell the rest of the story: Load posts increased dramatically, to more than 4,000 per day instead of 2,000, while truck posts declined from about 900 per day to between 600 and 700 per day,” says DAT’s Peggy Dorf. These two factors have created a load-to-truck imbalance, which puts upward pressure on rates.

Used truck market to see flood of supply in coming years, prices expected to fall
“Used truck supply goes a long way in determining the environment” for pricing, said Arrow Truck Sales President Steve Clough. “The supply of used trucks has already been determined based on what was retailed 3, 4 and 5 years ago. That’s a wall of inventory that’s coming.”
September 19, 2016
2014’s and 2015’s high truck build numbers will flood the used market starting next year, Clough said, which will put downward pressure on used truck pricing until 2019 or 2020.

Capacity crisis, rate boom likely in the coming year, experts say
The regulatory swath barreling toward the trucking industry — highlighted by electronic logging devices and greenhouse gas emissions standards — combined with likely increases in fuel costs and an uptick in freight could push the trucking industry into a full-fledged capacity crisis as soon as late next year, says FTR economist Noel Perry.

Carriers need to plan for potential global recession, transpo economists say
Despite strong headwinds from various sources, the U.S. economy continues to grow slowly, but carriers need to have a plan in place for the coming years should the economy reverse course and dip into a recession.
