Navistar reports $248 million loss in first quarter of 2014 FY
Navistar, maker of International brand trucks, reported a net loss of $248 million in the first quarter of 2014, stemming from lower sales brought on by its continuing transition away from EGR to SCR as a means for meeting federal emissions standards and lower sales of military vehicles, the company said.

Per-mile rates on the spot market saw healthy spikes in all three segments — flatbed, reefer and dry van — in February, pushing rates to big year over year gains and setting a record for dry van loads, according to data released this week by load board Internet Truckstop.

Five-week diesel price surge snapped as national average creeps downward
And so ends the most recent — and rather large — upswing in diesel prices seen in late January and all of February, as the national average diesel price fell in the week ended March 3 one-tenth of a cent to $4.016, according to the Department of Energy.

YRC’s loss shrunk in 2013, but grew in fourth quarter
YRC Worldwide saw an operating loss of $31.2 million in 2013 — 16.4 percent better than last year’s yearly operating loss — while the company’s consolidated operating revenue for the year grew 0.3 percent to $4.865 billion, it announced this week.

Trailer orders see 28% growth, used truck prices hit record in January
Trailer orders in January grew 28 percent from the same month last year, according to numbers released this week by ACT Research, who also released data saying the average selling price of a Class 8 truck in January set a record at $44,000.

Diesel hits $4 mark for first time in nearly a year
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel in the week ended Feb. 24 breached $4 for the first time since the week ended March 25, 2013, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration, who reported the price of diesel rose 2.8 cents nationally to $4.017.

The amount of truck tonnage carried in January fell 4.3 percent from December, according to the American Trucking Associations, due to negative impacts of the several nationwide impacting winter weather events. November and December, however, were record-high months.

The Department of Energy has once again upwardly revised its forecast for 2014’s average diesel price, pushing it up another 2 cents to $3.83 — still a 9-cent drop from 2013’s average — in its Short Term Energy Outlook. 2015’s price is expected to fall a dime, too.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel jumped again in the week ended Feb. 10, rising 2.6 cents to $3.977. The price of diesel has now risen 10.4 cents in the last three weeks and has hit its highest point since the week ended Sept. 9’s $3.981.

Trucking adds 3,200 jobs as overall employment gains fall short
The for-hire trucking industry added 3,200 new payroll jobs on a net basis in January, according to latest monthly figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The first month of 2014 follows a weak hiring report from December, when trucking added only 100 jobs.
