Trade between the U.S. and NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico totaled $89.6 billion in February, and trucks moved $53.6 billion of that, according to numbers released this week by the Department of Transportation this week.

Truck tonnage up slightly in March, still ‘clawing out of hole’ from winter
Truck tonnage rose 0.6 percent in March from February, according to the American Trucking Associations’ monthly For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, but tonnage is still trying to recoup losses caused by severe winter weather in December and January that sidelined freight movement.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel jumped 1.9 cents in the week ended April 21 to $3.971, snapping a streak of six consecutive weekly drops that totaled 6.9 cents.

Truckload linehaul rates spiked in March, with the Cass Truckload Linehaul Index showing a 6 percent year-over-year increase – the largest in 35 months – and setting a new high. Intermodal traffic also continued to rise and a Federal Reserve survey confirms transportation demand has strengthened. Industrial production likewise has increased.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel dropped for the third consecutive week in the week ended March 31, falling another 1.3 cents to $3.975, according to the Department of Energy. The price is now down 4.6 cents since the week ended March 17.
