January truck orders far exceed expectations, up more than 50% year over year
Class 8 truck orders were above the 30,000 mark for the second consecutive month in January for the first time since 2006, according to preliminary data released this week by FTR and ACT Research, signaling “very positive” signs for the industry and for freight.

Rates drop in all three segments in January, still strong and up big year over year
Per-mile spot market rates in all three segments — flatbed, reefer and dry van — fell in the first month of the year from December’s rates, according to data released this week by Internet Truckstop. Compared to Jan. 2013, however, rates are up as much as 30 cents in one segment.

Of fleet executives questioned in a recent survey, 62 percent said they intended to place orders for Class 8 trucks in the next three months, and 48 percent said they planned to make trailer orders.

Diesel sees biggest jump in 5 months, nearing $4
The national average diesel price in the week ended Feb. 3 spiked 4.7 cents to $3.951, the largest week to week increase since Sept. 2 and the second largest in nearly a year, when the price rose 5.3 cents in the week ended Feb. 18.

Both the amount of loads available and freight rates fell in the week ended Jan. 25, according to DAT Trendlines, as the arctic blast from the “polar vortex” event earlier this month and other blasts of cold air stymied a strong start to January.

Truck orders up 17 percent in December, up 50 percent year over year
Class 8 orders in December hit their highest point since March 2006 en route to a 50 percent year over year gain and a 50 percent gain over November, according to preliminary data released last week by ACT Research. Trailer orders fell in 2013 by 2 percent.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel rose in the week ended Jan. 27 3.1 cents to $3.904, climbing after two weeks of price drops, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration.

Trucking conditions down in November but remain ‘healthy,’ FTR says
The monthly Trucking Conditions Index produced by FTR saw a 20 percent drop in November from October, down to 7.01, but even with the decline, the environment for trucking companies is still positive, the research firm reported this week. FTR also says indicators point to 2014 being a strong year.

Tonnage sees best year in 2013 since late ’90s following December increase
Truck tonnage in 2013 increased 6.2 percent over 2012, driven by a surge in November and a small bump in December, making the year the best for tonnage since 1998, says the American Trucking Associations, who released its monthly For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index this week.

The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel now has fallen nearly 4 cents in the last two weeks, falling 1.3 cents in the week ended Jan. 20 to $3.873, according to the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration.

Freight shipments rise again in Nov., push DOT freight index to another all-time high
For-hire transportation carried 1.2 percent more freight in November than it did in October, according to the DOT. The increase again pushed the BTS’ Freight Transportation Services Index to an all-time high. The index benefited from growth in tonnage-intensive industries, however, like construction and fracking.

Diesel price sees biggest fall since early November, down 2.4 cents
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell in the week ended Jan. 13 for the first time since the middle of December, declining 2.4 cents to $3.886 a gallon, according to the Department of Energy. That drop is also the largest since a 2.5-cent drop Nov. 11, and is the third largest drop since a 3.6-cent drop in the week ended April 29.
