Tonnage hit record high in August, ATA says
Tonnage carried by the for-hire trucking industry rose 1.6 percent in August, as measured by the American Trucking Associations’ seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index, pushing the measure of freight movement to its highest reading on record.

Diesel continues price plummet, hits 26-month low
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell another 2.3 cents in the week ended Sept. 22 to $3.778, according to the Department of Energy. That’s the lowest average diesel price since the week ended July 16, 2012, and the 12th straight week that the price of diesel has either dropped or remained flat.

Diesel resumes price tumble, hasn’t increased since June
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel fell again in the week ended Sept. 15, according to the Department of Energy, who reported it as down another 1.3 cents to $3.801. The U.S.’ average price has not increased since the week ended June 30 and is at its lowest point in over two years.

The amount of freight moved by the for-hire transportation industry in the U.S. in July rose nine-tenths of a percent from the month prior, as measured by the DOT. The Index is just half a percentage point shy of its all-time high.

‘Extreme pressure’ on capacity set to drive rates higher, FTR says
FTR’s Trucking Conditions Index increased in July to a reading of 8.49, meaning a capacity crunch is putting upward pressure on rates, FTR says. The index could move even higher — signaling even tighter capacity — if the economy continues to gain steam this fall, FTR says.

Diesel price unchanged in most recent week, remains at two-year low
The national average price for a gallon of on-highway diesel did not change in the week ended Sept. 8 from the week prior, remaining at $3.814, according to the Department of Energy. That’s the lowest national average price since July 2012, following nine straight weeks of drops. The price is down 16.7 cents from the same week last year.

Truck tonnage as measured by the American Trucking Associations’ For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 1.3 percent in July, pushing the index closer to November 2013’s all-time high. Tonnage was up 3.6 percent in the month year over year.
