Controversial trucks-only toll signed into law by R.I. governor
With the bill signed into law, drivers of class 8 trucks will pay a maximum of $20 to travel through the state along Interstate 95 one-way. Each electronic toll gantry a trucker passes under would cost about $3. The maximum daily charge would be $40.

House committee clears bill that exempts carriers from complying with state laws on driver pay, breaks
The trucking-relevant clauses would: (1) Block states from requiring drivers to take meal and rest breaks, if such a law is on the books at the state level, (2) exempt carriers from penalties for not requiring drivers to take state-law-required breaks and (3) Allow carriers, as employers, to skirt any state laws requiring drivers be paid “separate or additional compensation” beyond mileage or other base pay.

Rhode Island is one step closer to enacting the nation’s only toll policy that targets only Class 8 trucks. Trucking groups have spoken out loudly against the plan in recent months, with the Rhode Island Trucking Association warning lawmakers that truck drivers will avoid traveling through the state if the Class 8 truck tolls are enacted.

The request would exempt Farruggio’s drivers who stay within the 100 air-mile radius but occasionally exceed the 12-hour limitation from having to complete a daily record of duty status.
